Location

Weltevreden is situated in the Kalahari border region of the Northern Cape province of South Africa, one hundred miles west of the provincial capital of Kimberley. Altitude is around 4750 feet. The area is characterized by rocky hills interspaced by open plains The vegetation consists of’ grasslands merging into savanna with Olive trees and desert shrubs occurring in the hills. We do not have a profusion of insect and invertebrate life as the climate is so dry. Mosquitoes are not a problem at all even in the summer. We have very few snakes and spiders on the ranch, and of the species we do have coming across a poisonous version is very rare. Having said that, there is a profusion of wildlife, in the shape of birds and mammals. We do recommend that everyone has an up to date tetanus inoculation.

Climate

Summer days are long and hot and the nights warm with daytime temperatures varying between 30 - 45 degrees Celsius, dropping to 20 - 25 Celsius at night. Winter days are mild to warm and the nights cold to very cold. Temperatures vary between 10 and 25 Celsius during the day to below freezing at night. Annual rainfall is between 10 and 18 inches but very erratic.
